20 December 2022 ***************************** operates a remodeling, repair, yardwork, maintenance handyman business out of ******, ***** and was highly recommended to me by a neighbor as doing quality work. I contacted him during the Thanksgiving weekend for building a pergola over a two-run dog kennel. There were other odd jobs I needed done, such as hanging two horse feeders and repairing a chain link fence that had started to lean. ********************** quoted me a price of $2262, but I ended up paying him $2362. He told me that the material was higher than what he had originally thought. When he asked for the extra $100, the material had already been bought and the so-called pergola had been built. I did not quant to quibble about $100, so I paid him. The bigger problem is that ***************************** did not really know what a pergola looks like, and instead of asking me what I had in mind, or researching and showing me some pictures, he and his helper came into my yard and just threw up a frame around the dog kennel. The posts were regular treated 4x4s and rest of the frame were flimsy untreated wooden boards. The dog kennel was supposed to be roofed; however, I was told by a roofing company that the frame is not suitable for a roof. Any major windstorm would tear the structure out of the ground and blow it away. We also had agreed to place lattice around the sides of the structure for shade. Problem is that the lattice is poorly attached to the sides of the kennel and not to the top frame. Where the screws are, the lattice panels are broken. The northside is already sagging. The lattice panels are only covering half of the west and north sides and are not even flush with each other. On the northside, the panel is hanging over the dog kennel with no obvious purpose. Overall, the workmanship is so shoddy that I did not want ***************************** to return for the rest of the work. Unfortunately, I had already paid *****************************, and decided to send him a picture of a real pergola, asking for some of my money back, and explaining the problems with the frame he put up. I could live with the frame, instead of the pergola, but I cannot live with the workmanship. ***** responded with an apology, stating that he showed me the finished product. He never offered to reimburse me for some of my expenses. However, when he showed me the finished product, it was too late. What were we going to do about a frame that is not remotely resembling a pergola? He never offered to fix his shoddy work to my satisfaction. I recognize that I should not have paid him. However, what I would like to see happen is that he fix the shoddy work to my satisfaction, and to warn others of his business practices. Thank you for your assistance,**************** ************
