I bought a 2018 **** Edge from Holiday Chevrolet on February 6, 2023 for $22,800. This car has an EcoBoost 2.0 engine in it which was manufactured at the *********, **** plant. These engines manufactured in **** are known by **** to have a latent defect called "coolant intrusion," whereby engine coolant leaks into the cylinders. This exact thing happened to my vehicle. Coolant intruded into cylinder number two, and when I took it to the dealership, they said it needed a new engine at the cost of $7500. In June 2022, **** themselves issued a service bulletin to all **** dealerships telling them that this is a known latent defect in the engines. Therefore, the Holiday dealership KNEW about this defect as they would have received the service bulletin prior to me buying the vehicle. So they sold me a vehicle with an engine that has a known latent defect and they did NOT inform me of this. Had I known of this defect, I would not have bought the car. We took the vehicle to a 3rd party mechanic shop who put a brand new factory **** engine in it, this one made in ********, *****. The Valencia engine does NOT have this latent defect. This new engine cost me $5550 at the 3rd party mechanic shop. I am seeking reimbursement for this amount of money from the Holiday dealership, as they sold me the vehicle in bad faith. I have attached the ****-issued service bulletin to this complaint, along with invoice for the new engine that I had to purchase.

    Business response

Thank you for the opportunity to investigate and respond to this complaint.  Holiday Chevrolet takes pride in providing honest and transparent sales experiences in a relaxed, no-pressure environment.  Holiday Chevrolet would not have access to any bulletins released by *******************  Therefore, Holiday Chevrolet would not have knowledge of the bulletin regarding the 2.0L Ecoboost.  In reviewing the bulletin that was attached, the "Issue" states that "SOME" ********* Edge may exhibit a low coolant level, white exhaust smoke and/or a runs rough condition......", not All.  This vehicle was subject to our normal inspection process prior to sale and none of the elements or conditions listed in the bulletin existed on this vehicle and we certainly would not have sold the vehicle otherwise.  Furthermore, Holiday Chevrolet checks for any and all recall notices prior to sale and there were certainly no recalls, safety or otherwise, listed or attached to the vin number associated with this Edge.  Therefore, we would have no reason to believe this **** Edge did not meet our standard of quality as a dependable source of transportation based on the pre-sale inspection done by our service department as well as the lack of recall status determined by the sales department.  Regarding the expense of the replaced motor, this car was sold with a 3yr/****** mile warranty.  At the time of sale the car had ****** miles, giving the majority of the vehicle including the motor warranty coverage through Feb. 2026 or  ******* miles, whichever comes first.  If this Edge has exceeded the warranty coverage miles, indicating more than ****** miles have been driven over the period of ******************************************************************************* excellent running condition at the time of sale and gave no indication of possible motor issues outside of a recall or ****************** bulletin.  Simply stated, Holiday Chevrolet would have no way of knowing, outside of normal inspection processes, that this particular **** Edge would eventually need a new motor beyond ****** miles after the date of sale.  Again, we appreciate the opportunity to respond and feel confident that Holiday Chevrolet took all appropriate measures to ensure the standards were being met and in no way mis-lead or engaged in deceptive practices regarding the sale of this **** Edge.
