I am the beneficiary of my fathers annuity held by Thrivent and they have repeatedly shared differing information, and road blocked the distribution of my claim information. During three calls to customer support me and my ******************** advisor were told conflicting information. This delayed and delayed the payout of my claim.Business Response

This issue is ongoing. Thrivent has been uncooperative in disbursing funds owed to me awarded in a divorce settlement. The original account belongs to my ex wife and I was awarded half the amount in the settlement. I have signed the necessary paperwork that was sent to me but yet Thrivent refuses to send me my payment and has not contacted me regarding the matter. I have stopped by my local Thrivent office and was given excuses as to why they could not do anything there.Business Response

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
The response to BBB from Thrivent to the complaint is meaningless. I did receive contact from Thrivent after filing the complaint asking to send them a form signed by both myself and my ex wife along with a copy of my divorce decree. I have already signed the form along with my ex wife and it has been sent to them long ago. This is the reason I contacted BBB to help. At this point, I will attempt to fill the form out again and send it in again, but a generic response from Thrivent and no result or response after previously sending in this same form leaves me to believe I will still not receive my disbursement of funds.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
Thrivent has contacted me requesting all original paperwork be sent in to them again. They have also admitted that they made no attempt to contact me previously regarding the matter. The message I received stated "When the previous form was received, we did reach out to your ex-spouse for a copy of the divorce decree and did not receive a response." Because of this and their requirement to redo the form, it is going to take me more time and work. I have filled out the proper form and it will be sent to my ex wife for her signature once again. How long that will take will depend on her and if I need to file another court motion to force compliance. So thus far, there is no resolution just Thrivent requesting a signed form and documentation once again. I will consider this resolved when I have the account actually divided as ordered and changed to my name.

My entire family has maintained lifelong life insurance policies through Thrivent. My grandma has paid it for me since I was a baby. I made an overpayment of my own to cover the annual premium instead of the quarterly premium on the bill. Three months later they sent another bill showing the same quarterly amount due. I tried to contact them via their provided phone number (same as that listed by BBB) and email address, and requested statements going back 3 years to figure out what was actually paid, how it was applied, and what is actually due, but they give no response and continue mailing only quarterly bills requesting payments already received. I have no way of knowing when it would actually lapse, and no idea how to make them give me the information I need to manage payments correctly. They previously replied to my BBB complaint that they sent a letter answering my questions January 3, and BBB closed the complaint. The letter they sent does not answer my question. It is about something else that I did not ask for at all, "...you indicated it is your desire to change the billed amount to be annually." Please ask Thrivent to send me receipts reflecting all of the payments that were made to my account 2020 to present. Thank you.Business Response

Thrivent is not "for Lutherans", and do not practice non-profit. This company is all about the dollar, based on my personal experience. A policy was taken out in my name in ****, by my father who passed since. I was not aware of the policy, therefore, had no idea it even existed. That is until I received a ****-R in the mail that I owe taxes on it. When talking to a senior rep, they explained to me that when the policy was not paid, they create a loan against it to pay it, and another and another. That goes on until they decide to create a disbursement to pay the loan. Why would this not just be cancelled? Good question, but now I have a tax bill because Thrivent created loans to make more dollars on a policy created when I was 2 years old. Please pass this along to ALL who are thinking of signing with them. If it is not a business practice scam, at the very least it is a scheme. Shame on them for using the Lutheran name to make their billions.Business Response

My husband passed away and had insurance through Thrivent. They suggest you hire an attorney in order to submit a claim. Sent them a death certificate and will and it wasnt acceptable. They seriously dont want to pay out. My husband also had a policy with American Family. One call to them and a check was sent out the next week. How can two places be so different? I guess its pretty obvious. Dont do business with them. Unscrupulous. Going to file a complaint with the Attorney General. Probably end up spending most of the cost to hire an attorney. Shame on you!!!Business Response

Re: Case ID ********
Dear ****************,
As a member of Thrivents Client Relations team, my responsibility is to investigate and resolve issues that have caused dissatisfaction for our clients. We thank you for opportunity to provide a response to the ********* Better Business Bureau regarding ****************** concerns related to the distribution of life insurance death benefit proceeds.
In our review of the underlying claim, *********************** is not a named beneficiary on the referenced life insurance policy. The proceeds are payable to the estate of the deceased. A will does not supersede a named beneficiary on a life insurance policy.
Thrivents intention is to settle claims as quickly and efficiently as possible. Based on the concerns brought to Thrivents attention, an authorized representative for the estate would need take the appropriate action to claim the death proceeds. Thrivent would require a copy of the court appointed executor or administrator order.
If ***************** has any questions or needs further assistance, we remain ready to assist and can be reached at **************.Customer Answer

I did call for assistance and they were not helpful. Further investigation reveals that my husband bought this policy as a young man. It was a whole life policy. If they had reached out in the 40 years we were married, he would have named a beneficiary. If a company does not do this as a goodwill gesture that is sad. As many of the companies I deal with would have reached out and have reached out. As per their statement they are very aware the complications of not having a beneficiary. Ill get the attorney but others need to know whom they are dealing with. I will also pursue other options
