If you want to see a perfect example of healthcare disparity and discrimination, look at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Illinois. This company is a poster child of corporate discrimination and disparity among its customer base, where minorities are subtly, and sometimes blatantly, refused, denied and deprived of the healthcare and services they desperately need, are entitled to and have paid for through their monthly insurance premiums and deductibles. The customer representatives and case review managers will keep you on the phone for hours, only to hang up when you start to ask them questions and status regarding your claim. Every time you call, you're talking to someone different, and you spend the first 10 minutes providing ALL your details and explaining the reasons why you're calling. They spend another ***** minutes looking at all the notes and when you ask them if any progress has occurred on your case, they either just HANG UP, or they put you on hold for ***** minutes to call the "pre-determination" group to ask. Each time they supposedly "ESCALATE" the case, but the next day you call, they CAN NOT FIND that the case was escalated, "BUT will do so now". Even though they ask for your call back number every time you call, they NEVER call back. I've spent over 50 hours on the phone with them in the last 6 weeks, only to be either hung up on, or "we've escalated your claim and will get back to you in the next ***** hours", but NEVER do.We've requested to talk to supervisors, managers and/or directors, only to be told they don't have any! It is beyond understanding that a company would operate with such disregard for their customers, who are paying them to provide services they need, and for that company to do so without any concern for repercussions or customers feedback. If it were possible, I would give this company a NEGATIVE 5!

As a BCBSIL Dental member, I used an in-network dentist for a recent dental procedure. I paid my 20% and 50% co-pays as required for the specified parts of the procedure, yet the dentist billed me nearly $2000 for concurrent "unspecified" procedures. I requested BCBSIL to look into this, and they stated there was nothing wrong with the dentist billing for unspecified procedures. Really? What is the point of using an in-network provider or having insurance at all, if dentists can just tack on extra costs in addition to receiving reimbursement from the insurance company that they are contracted with. The dental policies are marketed to consumers stating that for "Procedure A" the insurer will cover either 80% or 50% of the cost, and the member is responsible for the rest. It does not say the member will also be required to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket on top of their co-pays for "unspecified" procedures the dentist wants to add to the ****. This seems like a clear breach of contract - either between the dentist and the insurance company or the insurance company and the consumer. I would hope others who have run into this same issue would reach out to regulators in their state to put an end to this practice or require insurers to add language to their marketing materials making consumers aware of the extra costs they can incur even while being insured.

I think the only reason there is 1 star is because no one can give you 0. This company is abhorrent in the way they treat their customers and the offices their customers work with. My genuine question is this: is BCBS of Illinois run by robots? They do not answer the phone for ANYONE patients or providers alike, it's all automated and hangs up on you. Also, very cold to cut off a patients treatment with no apologies or plans for the patient to actually get better. You know you are going to cost your company more in the long run with surgeries and ICU visits if you don't cover simple things like physical therapy, prescriptions, or imaging? You steal from patients and retract payments from providers (leaving the payment up to the patient) to line your own pockets, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

I am in the midst of beginning fertility treatment and BCBS of Illinois is my insurance. I have been waiting, per my doctors office, for 2 weeks now for an authorization to begin my first cycle of treatment. I just called BCBS to understand what the delay is and spent over an hour and a half on the line with them being routed to 3 different parts of the company without one single answer. They couldnt tell me if my doctor submitted pre-authorization, If pre-authorization was even required, if the medication in question was covered - nothing, not one answer. I am at a loss for words at how this company is not able to tell me, a paying member, answers to the most basic of questions. I now am going to miss the ability to start the cycle I need to for another month bc BCBS is so disfunctional and lacking the ability to service its members. If you are a mother or future mother - think twice.

After spending hours everyday for the last 3 months (February to may) & never receiving any proper information. Instead I was taken in circles by each of your workers. Some saying there is no application, others saying there is an application but no documentation they need to its all through, you should be getting a word from us on how to pay us. 3 months with hours on the phone to finally have a guy tell me he can't stay on the phone for 2 minutes (after having me on hold for over total of 5 hours). Every single time I had to explain the whole situation to them--your agent filed the application--it should be in the system since at the very most MARCH. Explaining to them that the amount of anger and frustration they have caused me, not to mention paying out of pocket for doctors appointments is NOT good for a pregnant lady. It is their job to help but instead they kept me on the phone for hours. Do they realize that we have jobs too??? or are they all idiots with no common sense. If a person moves from a different state, its COMMON SENSE to need coverage in this state. Instead they need clarification why I need coverage in this state after explaining over and over again---I MOVED TO THIS STATE. I wish I could curse them out because this is unacceptable.

After having 4 year membership (it is group insurance from employer), wanted to move out to individual & family insurance from different insurance company. They didn't even support me with loss off coverage letter. Kept me for 20 mins on the line, did cut the call later. On top of that the call is not eligible for giving review/feedback.
