In January 2024, my insurance changed. I went from a graduate student insurance through my university to an individual plan. I called into the Mayo Neurology (*********, **) department to update them and ask them to get approval from my insurance. The individual who I spoke with said that if I don't hear back then my insurance had approved my procedure and I could come in. I didn't hear back from **** so I went into Mayo ********* for the procedure twice. It wasnt until much later that I received a bill for $7,050.00 (Act # ********). I spoke to a Mayo customer service in July, she mentioned that it was an oversight by Mayo and that the customer service person must have been confused because the insurance numbers/agency was similar to the prior insurance. The customer service person also noted that **** did NOT reach out to my insurance company to get prior approval. I called my insurance and they corroborated that they were not contacted prior to the service. When I spoke with Mayo Clinic in October, they said that the only way to resolve this situation was to request my insurance to review their denial. I have called Mayo several times and have been told to wait for an update. I was called today November 15th, by the billing department to pay the 7K. I explained that the issue was an ERROR made by mayo staff. The staff person said that the insurance denied the claim. Which was news to me since, **** failed to communicate with me AGAIN. The billing staff said they would not be accountable for the bill regardless of how this situation was MISHANDLED. Offering a service for a specific price, stating that you are going to confirm that the insurance agency can guarantee that price, communicating to the customer that the approval went through, completing the service, and then CHANGING the price of the service is FRAUD. I would have never consented to this service had I known the cost.Business Response

First there are discrimination issues here against white people also patients who needed extreme care they set aside for simple things plus the front staff are vulgar and rude. This is a low class hospital and has lost its tradition of being a good hospital.Business Response

July 18, 2024. Date of service. After leaving The Mayo MI returning to ** I began receiving daily bills. The Mayo incorrectly billed my insurance BCBS THREE TIMES with the wrong prefix on my membership # despite my calling/sending photos of my insurance card. Then **** rejected multiple duplicate claims, combing through the claims they said **** was double-billing for same services. Each time I called or emailed Mayo they blamed my insurance. Nightmare. The Mayo needs to do much better. It's really upset me during a time of illness to have such bad business practice in their ****************** and you can't get restitution because they refuse to admit culpability despite abundant proof they were double-billing, changing dates on bills, sending different bills, and not getting information correct on said bills. This must not be permitted to continue. I have nowhere to turn to make sure this is right. **** have been amazing but The Mayo has been dishonest, uncooperative and rude. I want the billing to be adjusted to reflect what I was actually treated with and not all the wrong bills that they're still chasing me for.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:
the Mayo essentially put the onus of responsibility back on me. Whilst it may seem like splitting hairs, it is important all information is accurate. The Mayo billing was responsible for this, not myself, not my insurance company. In their letter they admit no fault, and directly imply it was my fault that started this. Untrue. I was asked to give all my insurance information prior to coming to the Mayo. I did. That included a dental card which the Mayo inputted as my insurance card. Given it is their sole job to ensure the insurance they input is verified and pre-authorized through my insurance nobody can work out why this occurred. Secondly, my insurance said they HAD gotten pre-authorization, which means at some juncture, the correct ID for my insurance was in the Mayo's possession. The minute I was informed by my insurance that the Mayo was using the incorrect ID I contacted the Mayo and photographed my card a second time. At this juncture the **** actually resubmitted claims a second time that were rejected because incredibly, the Mayo had the wrong ID a second time! THEN the Mayo says they will 'write off the amount owing' as if they are doing me a favor. But my insurance is ready and willing to pay, they've just been messed around by the Mayo so much. I spent over 4 hours on two conference calls between the Mayo and my insurance, Ultimately they say 'if we get monies from your insurance we will keep them for services rendered.' Their tone is one of unapologetic 'I'm giving you a freebie' which is utterly wrong. The Mayo did NOT write off over $3k if you look at the bills the only outstanding was $180 and that was because the Mayo billed on the wrong date of service. How can their business operate this way? Sending emails that cannot be replied to? They made zero effort. It was only when my partner contacted someone high up in the Mayo and I contacted the BBB that this was even addressed.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because: they said they'd reach out to me directly. Because they don't want BBB to see how they treat their patients. As per their last letter where they blamed everyone but themselves. I'd prefer it were public that they responded to me where you saw what they said because they shouldn't act one way in front of you but another to me. During this whole thing they never let me email them back they closed email correspondence each time. Making it so labor Intensive. Plus what I said about not accepting their "kind" one time payment to close out my account which infers they're being accommodating and reasonable. Read my emails there's no reasonable. They're being less than transparent.Initial Complaint

Mayo Clinic Diet used autorenewal without a courtesy reminder. Also, their website hides the option to cancel so well, that I still can't find it. There is no phone number to call. Everything is online only. I regret that I signed up for the program. It is awful and I never used it. The last thing I wanted was to renew it. I am complaining because I believe their business practice is unethical. It's unethical to use fine print to say a subscription will auto-renew and hide the cancellation option. Therefore, I want my renewal money back.Business Response
