I was admitted to Renown Regional Medical Center on February 16, 2024 immediately following a motor vehicle accident. As a result of the accident, one of the injuries I suffered was a broken heel in which I needed to have surgery. My surgery ended up being on February 20th. Feb 20: I was taken to pre-op. As I laid there, 3 nurses (Joan, Audra & don’t know the older blonde lady’s name but will refer to her as Nurse #3) were all prepping me for surgery at the same time. They seemed to be in a hurry and a little pushier than they probably should’ve been. At one point I just looked at Joan like wow and she apologized if it seemed like they were rushing me but they had to hurry before the doctor got there. (Come to find out later they were late for a staff meeting.) In all the rush, Nurse #3 told me to take out my earrings (a 14k gold ball and two ¼ ct diamond studs). I asked if I could keep them in because I don’t ever take them off. I thought because they were operating on my foot in wouldn’t be a big deal. She insisted that I had to take them off and would put them in a Ziploc bag and give them to my husband who was sitting in the room at the time. The nurse never handed the bag to my husband. Feb 22 – Stephanie and Audra both came up to see me. They both remembered me when they saw me. Audra remembered me handing my earrings to Nurse #3. Stephanie said they would continue looking, check with Nurse #3 and she would relay this information to Patient Relations for someone to assist me. March 19: A male called from Patient Relations saying they couldn’t find my earrings and there isn’t anything they can do because it isn’t documented! I have made several calls and sent 3 letters to Renown trying to get someone to assist. Those earrings may not be a big deal to them and only worth about $500.00 BUT they are a big deal to me. They were given to me by a loved on one my birthday and mean a lot.Initial Complaint

I went to Renown Health on January 24, 2024, for a steroid epidural; this procedure should only cost between $900-$2,000. (see attached bill from my previous health provider). After the procedure, they charged me and my insurance company $6,847.00. This is 4 X more than it should have cost. My insurance company (and they should not have) paid $5,447.00 and they are trying to get the remainder from me. I have contacted Renown several times, and they keep passing me off to different departments, but I have yet to resolve this. This has been going on since February, and they keep yanking me around. This is an obvious insurance scam by over charging me and my health insurance 4 times more than what it should cost for this procedure. I would appreciate your help contacting them to credit back what they have overcharged my insurance company. On 2-22-23 I went to Renown Pulmonary Health for a office visit. I paid my co pay of $50.00 and was seen by an A.P.R.N for about 5 minutes. I received the 1st inv. for $40.85 in March and immediately contacted Renown through MYCHART. I was given a quippy response saying you owe it. I then called Renown and was assured they would contact BCBS and figure out what was going on. No one ever called me back so I called BCBS who told me it was coded as a hospital outpatient visit and that's why I owe. I called Renown billing and went over everything and they said when they talked to BCBS they had no idea what I was talking about. This takes us to May. I again received an invoice for "the balance" of $40.85 and again contacted Renown billing who again said they would contact BCBS. I also again contacted BCBS who put in writing (attached) that the service was coded as HOSPITAL VISIT OUTPATIENT. I forwarded this to renown billing and after checking a few times I saw that I had a $0.00 balance on MYCHART. Imagine my surprise when on 10-6-2023 I received a text that I had a new bill from Renown, not new practically 10 months old after 4+ months of hearing nothing. This is not the 1st billing dispute I've had with Renown and I don't want any more. It is frustrating and time consuming. But I will not be robbed even of $40.85. If they want the money they need to provide a DETAILED explanation of why it should be more than any previous office visit to Renown Pulmonary Health had been ($50.00 copay). Of course collections is always an unspoken threat if you are holding out for any reason. Also, the MYCHART conversation team is beyond worthless. They obviously do zilch in the research department and reply as flippantly and uselessly as is humanly possible, a robot would be more empathetic.Business Response

Renown Hospital stay August 28, 29, 30, 2022, account number *******. Renown Hospital failed to file with my Medicare primary insurance and my Blue Cross Blue Shield secondary insurance in a timely manner resulting in disapproval of the Renown Hospital charges. Renown Health did not give me notice of failure to file until sending me a bill dated 09/14/2023 for $41,506.59 out of total charges of $99,576.75 due on 10/14/2023. I contacted Medicare on 10/06/2023 and they confirmed that charges had not been submitted in a timely manner. I checked with Blue Cross Blue Shield and no charges were submitted. On my Renown MyChart, Billing Account #******** it states that Medicare is Primary and that $4,023.86 was paid by Medicare but Medicare checked and has not paid anything. On my Renown MyChart, Billing Account #******** it states that Anthem is Primary and that $73,810.57 was paid by Anthem but my Blue Cross Blue Shield has not paid anything (and would not until Medicare paid). On my call to Medicare on 10/06/2023, they said that I was not responsible for charges that were not filed in a timely manner. I am requesting that Renown Health not claim that I am responsible for the Hospital charges on August 28, 29, and 30 of 2022 and that I receive notice that $0.00 payment is due.Business Response

Renown is attempting to collect $18 for a procedure performed on 1/31/2023. However, I have $30 credit on file that I provided on 1/13/2023 as prepayment for this procedure. I have asked that the $30 credit be used for the amount they are requesting. I have further asked that they report to my insurance that I paid them $30. I have sent multiple messages through mychart and have called the billing with no resolution.Business Response

On 1/5/23 I went to Renown South Meadows with Abdomnial pain. After they administered a pain killer, I passed out and had to be revived. Upon revival, they informed me I was having a heart attack and needed to be transferred by Ambulance to Renown Regional. Upon arrival at Renown Regional, I was monitored for a few hours and it was determined that I was NOT having a heart attack. I never received any diagnosis for my abdominal pain. This is a scam to extort money out of patients. I have to pay for 2 visits to the ER in the same day plus an ambulance ride. The doctor who told me I was having a heart attack was wrong.Business Response

My father was brought by ambulance to the emergency room at the Renown Medical Center on Mill St in Reno, NV on 11/29/22 at approximately 2:00 pm. My mother followed the ambulance in her vehicle and attempted to park in the ER parking due to her being handicapped with handicap permits on her vehicle. Derek, the er parking security clerk followed my mom into the er after she parked and made her move to the large parking lot across the hospital (1/4-1/3 of a mile from the ER) stating she could not park there because she wasn't the patient. There were no accommodations made and she was required to move. I watched others drop off patients and park their vehicles in the same area my mother tried to park in as we waited for an update on my fathers condition.Business Response

I have spent hours with this billing department costing me money and time. We got a bill in February 2022 for $845. The EOB shows we owe $500. I was happy to pay as soon as it was adjusted. I called many times and was told over and over it would be reviewed. I was told it is not past due. I also had to email the EOB MANY times. It got either lost or not in his file. Finally 9 months later I see his account at the same amount and shows past due? I get different information each time I call. I am requesting the balance be adjusted in full based on our time, efforts and how much grief this has caused. I asked the hospital to file a grievance and they said that doesn't exist? That's not possible. it's a hospital!!! They wont allow me the chance to request an adjustment. That is not legal. I asked for a form to file a complaint and again they said they don't have one. That doesn't make sense. They gave me a phone number 702-486-3587 to make a complaint. It goes to voice mail and says box is full. I think this is a scam to push people away. I don't know what else to do.Business Response

I was scheduled for a surgical procedure on August 30, 2022. Prior to that procedure I provided Renown with my insurance information. According to the representative, my portion was going to $4,000 which is my maximum out of pocket. I told the representative that I could not pay the $4,000, but could use my FSA money which was $2,850. That payment was made on July 20, 2022, I had the procedure on August 30, 2022. There were two bills, one for per-surgical serveries $519.00 provided on August 8, 2022, which after processing my portion was $80.40, paid on October 4, 2022. The other was for surgical services provided on August 30, 2022. The billed amount was $27,409.50 after processing my responsibility was $500 paid September 27, 2022 That means my total responsibility was $580.40. My complaint is that after speaking with "Joe" in the billing department that Renown will not refund the $2,269.60, the amount Renown over collected from me. Joe stated that the bills needed to be finalized. Joe could not provide with a date that would Renown would considered these bills finalized. I have since used Renown and have paid my co-pays despite have a a significant refund balance, so there is no way Renown can claim that I owe any money and if I did, they still have over collected. I fear that I am violation of FSA tax deferral rules because I cannot substantiate the medical expenses. I would like to have a refund so I can return the excess funds to my FSA administrator, but Renown will simply not acknowledge that the surgical bills have been finalized.Business Response
