We bought our house in 2021 and inherited the Culligan water system that the previous owners had installed. We kept the system and followed their recommended maintenance. However, we noticed that the water was perhaps leaching copper from our pipes, and causing blue-green staining on our tubs and sinks. I asked their maintenance folks about this, and they tested our water for acidity. It was slightly acidic, and so the Culligan worker recommended that we should add additional treatment to take care of the acidity. I was curious why our groundwater would be acidic, and so I tested the water myself, both what was coming directly from our well and the water at our tap (after the Culligan filtration systems). Turns out, the Culligan filters were making the water acidic! The pure water coming out of our well was neutral. When I complained about this, they sent over their water expert to do more testing. She informed us that we really needed to do much more maintenance on the system, as well as purchase another component that would correct for the waters acidity. The suggested maintenance included changing the medium in the anion filter, which she said had never been changed since installation many years ago. She told me that the tank could be radioactive (!!!) because it was filtering Uranium. Culligan had never mentioned this before, nor recommended this level of maintenance. I decided to do a little of my own research. I tested our well water for Uranium. Yes, its present, but at 5.21 ug/L, considerably less than the federal (30 ug/L) and the VT (20 ug/L) water standards. Our towns maximum recorded Uranium: 14 ug/L. Seems like the anion filter was unnecessary. Had they scared the previous elderly owners into getting a system that they didnt really need? Who knows! Also they charged us $795 to have the system removed. It took them 45 minutes. For months, I asked for an itemized bill to show me labor costs and disposal costs. They never did.
