$2314.65 in vet expenses, total premium paid so far $1604.40 ($133.70/month for 1 year) = $3919.05 and they have paid out a whopping $65.53!! Always some excuse as to why they wont pay out, you need 3 of the same problem to occur with your pet before they will consider paying out + whatever your deductible is!! Trupanion is a total scam and should be shut down. I will be taking my losses and changing to a different insurance provider.Trupanion

Misleading coverage and terrible customer service. I signed up with the incentive that I had immiediate coverage. They make excuses and you have to call several times to finally get a representative that can provide actual facts. But at that point its super frustrating and it shouldnt be. This made me cancel 1 month into dealing with this company. I would not reccommend this pet ****************** Save yourself the hassle.Trupanion

When I signed up for Trupanion they said my dog vomited in 2015 and was overweight in 2015. I have paid my dues for 9 years and they have never covered a claim. They use the pre existing excuse of overweight in 2015 to deny every claim. They can claim that every sickness she ever gets is caused by this being overweight in 2015. They have never paid a claim and they never will. I have paid over $5,000 in premiums and they have declined all claims because of this pre existing condition. I feel like I am dealing with a dis honest company that will never treat you fairly. Stay Away. You were warned.Trupanion

Every claim we've submitted to them has been denied. Most recently, we filed one for our dog's allergies. Initially, it was approved and applied toward our deductible. But a few weeks later, they reversed the decision and told us they wont cover itapparently because its now considered a pre-existing condition from the dogs previous owner (which was over a year ago). Overall, were super disappointed and currently looking into other companies. Either way, were out of luck when it comes to his allergies now, because they officially count as pre-existing.Ohand they also raised our premium by $20/month at the start of the year. 10/10 would not recommend.Trupanion

Hi *****,
We're sorry to hear that your pup needed medical treatment, and we understand that we haven't provided you with the claims experience that you'd hoped for. We always strive to process your claims as fairly and accurately as possible according to your pet's complete medical records as provided by their veterinarian, as well as our coverage terms. While we can't help with issues that start before a pet's coverage is fully in place and any waiting periods are through, please know that this doesn't affect our ability to help with new and unrelated issues that may show up down the road.

Trupanion ************* has what I believe to be unethical pricing practices and misleading claims about their policy structure. I have been a loyal customer of ********************** since my Cavalier was 8 weeks old, and in just two years, my monthly premium has increased by nearly 50%. Most recently, I received notification that my premium would rise again to an outrageous $205 per month for my now 2-year-old dog. This increase is unreasonable, especially considering that my 5-year-old Cavalier is insured with another pet insurance company for half the cost. Despite Trupanions claims of being superior, their policy structure is far less consumer-friendly than competitors. Unlike other pet insurance providers that require only an annual deductible, Trupanion enforces a separate deductible per condition, making it difficult for to receive adequate reimbursements. Additionally, Trupanion promotes their unlimited payouts, yet many other companies offer the same benefit at significantly lower prices.I have only filed 5 claims over the past 2 years, yet I have only been reimbursed a mere $56. Despite their assurances that premiums are not based on claim history but rather breed and geographic location, I find it highly suspicious that my premium continues to skyrocket. It appears that Trupanion is engaging in price gouging and misleading marketing to maximize profits while providing minimal benefits to policyholders.I will be canceling my Trupanion policy and switching to Figo *************, where I have been quoted a significantly lower monthly premium of $65 with better coverageincluding a $250 annual deductible, unlimited payouts, and 90% reimbursement. Even with additional coverage for exam fees and wellness (which Trupanion does not offer), my Figo premium will be just $92less than half of what Trupanion is charging.Trupanions rates appear to be designed to take advantage of pet owners rather than provide fair and reasonable coverage.Trupanion

Hi *******,
We know we've been in touch on another platform, and we wanted to take the time to respond here as well. Your experience is important to us, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback here. We understand how difficult it is to see a large change to your monthly cost over time, and we always want you to feel confident in the medical coverage you choose to protect your pet with.
We always want to provide our members with the most value for their coverage, which is why our deductibles are per-condition for the lifetime of that condition. We want to help pet owners avoid paying the same deductible year over year for the same issue, which can be especially helpful for chronic or ongoing injuries and illnesses. Once a deductible is satisfied for any eligible issue, we can help with related treatment costs without any caps or limits for the rest of that condition's duration - even if it lasts your pets entire lifetime.
We take your concerns seriously, and we believe we were able to locate your account with the information provided here. We see that a member of our team will be reaching out to discuss your account with you soon. In the meantime, please let us know whenever we can offer any additional aid or clarification. Our team is here to support you 24/7 at *************.

An absolutely ridiculous rate hike for our two GSDs, who weve had coverage for the last 4-5 years. Nothing new in their care. $435 last September, which was already too high. $764 in December, and $999 since then. Unjustifiable. Time to just start a pet account instead. If I put in that $1,000, then at least I know I wont be ******* away the majority of our money, and 100% will actually go towards their care when/if needed.Trupanion

Hi ****,
We take your concerns seriously, and we appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback with us here. We know it's never easy to see a large change to your monthly cost. We always want you to feel confident in the coverage and pricing you have for your pups, and we'd like to offer some additional information here.
Our topmost priority is providing our members with access to unlimited payouts in the event of the unexpected. To do this, it's essential that we stay priced to support all of our members no matter what changes in the industry we cover - veterinary medicine. We'll regularly review our pricing alongside overall trends in the cost and use of veterinary treatments. This means that changes in our pricing are mainly due to an overall increased use of veterinary care and improvements to that care through better technology. By keeping our pricing in line with the industry we cover, we can continue to support the unlimited payouts we promise for every pet we protect.
During this review, we analyze trends including how much veterinary treatments cost, how many treatments are being provided, and how those treatments may be improving with technology. For example, we consider how expensive a treatment like an x-ray is, as well as how many treatments are being performed on pets, and whether pets are receiving more sophisticated treatments, such as MRIs, instead of x-rays. We then apply this to your pet's monthly cost as defined by their unique characteristics at enrollment to determine their updated pricing.
Your situation is important to us, and we hope that you've been able to connect with our team directly for the best support possible regarding your account. In the meantime, please call us whenever we can offer any further information or clarification. We're here to assist you 24/7 at *************, or via live chat online through your member portal.

I agree with the 1 star reviews. My dog had a ************* that needed removal. I received a detailed quote from my vet. I sent the quote to Trupanion for pre-approval. I was pleased to receive detailed pre-approval, outlining what was covered, excluded from my policy, and minus applicable deductible and coinsurance. When my dog was under anesthesia the vet called saying shed discovered a newly ************* that must have occurred in the weeks subsequent to his initial diagnosis. I gave approval to remove the second tooth within the same procedure. The vet bill for the procedure was the same as the high end estimate they provided initially and upon which Trupanion provided pre-approval. It was apparent the vet hadnt charged me for the second tooth extraction. When I sent the paid invoice to Trupanion they requested medical records, which I thought was odd since theyd already provided pre-approval. After a few days they emailed that they werent paying anything. Through creative accounting they divided the paid amount between the two extracted teeth in a manner that, once deductible and coinsurance was applied to each, resulted in zero liability for Trupanion.Condition(s)Invoice subtotal*Not coveredCoinsurance applied (10%)1Deductible appliedTrupanion paidYour shareRemaining deductible 1Dental (tooth) Fracture$1,542.26$491.13$105.11$946.02$0.00$1,542.26$53.98 2Fracture (Unspecified)$1,051.08$0.00$105.11$945.97$0.00$1,051.08$54.03 ..Totals$2,593.34$491.13$210.22$1,891.99$0.00$2,593.34 It defies reason that Trupanion would cover the cost of one medically necessary dental extraction and then decide they had zero liability for two extractions performed in the same procedure and the same charge as one extraction. If these had been separate events they would have paid the approved amount twice. Trupanion loves saying they value transparency and wishing your furry friend a speedy recoveryhonesty not so much??!Trupanion

From the above Trupanion comment, it seems theres recognition that they mishandled my dogs claim. Accordingly I appealed their claim denial. After almost a month passed, they agreed to pay the original pre-approved amount. I give Trupanion credit for reviewing their original, and wholly unjustified, denial. However it shouldnt require the policyholder to guess that an appeal process is available when Trupanion denies claim payment. They should disclose this option with every denial notice to the policyholder. I would love to hear from Trupanion why they dont.Review fromKathryn L

I was quoted a premium of $98.I was then billed $105. After talking to representative price was adjusted to $86 due to agent submitting wrong breed in error. Upon signing up, when I asked if premiums would increase yearly, he wrote: We do not have birthdate pricing meaning the rate will never increase based on your pet getting olderin our system your rate will always be based on the age you enrolled your petI just received an email that our new monthly premium is being increased from $86.25 to $116.34 due to Trupanions review of data for his breed. We have received no reimbursement for the 11 months we have had coverage. The increase is due to acquired data. But there is no data given to validate the increase. All agents were nice and respectful, but they stuck to the increased premium is due to national data.Trupanion

Hi ****,
We appreciate you taking the time to reach out and share this feedback with us here. We understand we havent provided you with an exceptional experience, and we take your concerns seriously.
Well always base your pet fairly and accurately on their unique factors when they enroll with us, as well as your chosen coverage options. These factors include their breed, ***, geographical location, and age at the time of enrollment. While well review our costs regularly to ensure we continue to support unlimited payouts to our members in the event of the unexpected, well never make changes to your pets pricing due to them celebrating a birthday or needing to use their coverage.
Instead, well examine a number of broad factors in the veterinary industry, such as the fluctuating cost of care due to inflation, the increased use of better veterinary technology in the field, and how many pets are being treated as more households welcome new members into their homes. Well then apply our findings to your pets factors to develop their updated monthly cost.
Your situation is important to us, and we appreciate that youve taken the time to speak with us directly regarding your concerns. Please know that were always available in the meantime to offer any additional clarification or help we can. You can reach us 24/7 at *************, or by chatting with us live online through your member portal.
